How Much RAM Do I Need?
For general browsing, email and everyday tasks, 8GB is now closer to a minimum than a comfortable amount. 16GB is the more comfortable baseline for typical multitasking and modern browser use, with 32GB or more mainly relevant for video editing or other resource-intensive work.
What RAM actually does
Storage (your hard drive or SSD) holds everything long-term; RAM is where the computer keeps what it's actively working on right now. Every open program, every browser tab, and Windows itself all claim a share of it while running. When there isn't enough left, the computer has to start swapping data back and forth with the (much slower) drive to cope, which is exactly what a slowdown from too little RAM feels like — things get sluggish specifically as you open more, rather than being slow from the moment the computer starts.
Everyday use — 8GB is now the floor, not the target
8GB used to be a comfortable everyday amount; it's increasingly just the minimum today, mainly because web browsers have become far heavier on memory than they used to be. A handful of tabs, especially anything with video or heavy scripting, can use a surprising share of 8GB on its own. It's still workable for light, single-task use, but there's little buffer left once a few things are open at once.
Typical use — 16GB is the comfortable baseline
For most people today — browsing with a realistic number of tabs open, email, documents, video calls, general multitasking — 16GB is the amount that actually feels comfortable rather than just adequate. This is the sensible default to aim for on a general-use computer being upgraded or bought new, and it's usually enough headroom that you stop noticing RAM as a bottleneck at all.
Heavier and specialised use
Frequent heavy multitasking, common productivity software with large files, or running several demanding programs side by side benefits from staying at the 16GB mark or a little above. Video editing, larger creative workloads, virtual machines, or genuinely professional multitasking is where 32GB or more starts to matter — but this is a smaller group of use cases, and going beyond it rarely helps unless the workload specifically calls for it.
RAM won't fix everything
More memory only helps if memory is actually the bottleneck. If a computer is slow from the moment it starts up — not just once several things are open — that's a much stronger sign of a storage problem (still on a mechanical hard drive) than a memory one, and adding RAM won't meaningfully change that. The pattern of when the slowdown appears is the best clue: slow immediately points to storage, slow once multitasking points to memory. A proper diagnosis settles it either way rather than guessing and buying the wrong upgrade.
Can I just add more RAM to any computer?
No — some laptops have memory soldered directly to the motherboard, which rules out an upgrade entirely regardless of how much would help. Desktops and many laptops do have upgradeable memory, but it's worth checking the specific model rather than assuming.
Is there a downside to installing more RAM than I need?
Not really, beyond the extra cost — a computer won't run worse with more RAM than it uses. The main risk is spending money on capacity that won't actually be used, which is why matching the amount to how you actually use the computer, rather than just buying the maximum it supports, is the more sensible approach.
