Laptop Turns On but Screen Is Black
The laptop appears to power on normally — lights, fan noise, sometimes the keyboard backlight — but the screen stays completely black or dark, sometimes with a faint backlight glow but no image.
Quick answer: If the laptop's lights and fan come on but the screen stays black, connect an external monitor — if you get a picture there, the laptop is likely running fine and the fault is the screen or its cable. If the external monitor is also black, the fault is more likely graphics or a deeper startup issue.
Likely causes
- A failed screen or a loose cable connecting it to the motherboard
- A failed graphics component
- Windows attempting to output to a display that isn't there (residual external monitor setting)
- A startup fault occurring before the display would normally initialise
What you can safely check yourself
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C to see whether the laptop is actually running
- Try pressing the keyboard shortcut to cycle display output (often Fn + a function key) in case it's outputting to the wrong screen
- Listen for the normal startup chime or drive activity, which suggests the computer is running even without a picture
When it needs a proper look
If an external monitor also shows nothing, or the laptop shows signs of running but never produces a picture on either display, that points to an internal fault needing proper diagnosis.
